This was also clearly seen in the international reactions after the publication of a video where the Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, appeared humiliating the kidnapped activists of the Global Flotilla “Sumud”.

The images caused outrage on social networks and diplomatic reactions from several Western countries. Israeli ambassadors were called for clarification, while the US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, declared that Ben-Gvir “betrayed the dignity of his nation”.

But in truth, Ben-Gvir did not betray anything. It simply exposed the systematic disregard for human dignity that characterizes Israeli colonialism. In a colonial regime, dignity is not universal. International outrage over the video seemed more like diplomatic theater than real opposition to inhumanity.

For years, Palestinians have been filmed being bound, stripped, imprisoned in inhumane conditions and treated as worthless beings. However, Israel’s “security” narrative has consistently dominated the reality of dehumanization.

Mainstream international media have often repeated Israeli statements that the military’s actions are carried out “in accordance with international law,” even as images from Gaza show mass destruction and human suffering.

Only when non-Palestinian activists faced similar treatment did world leaders react with surprise and concern. But why weren’t they shocked earlier? The answer also lies in the statements of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Commenting on the incident, he said that “Israel has the right to stop the provocative flotillas of Hamas supporters”, but added that Ben-Gvir’s behavior “does not represent the values and norms of Israel”. There is always room for dehumanization, as long as it is carried out within politically acceptable limits. The problem for many governments is not the fact that Palestinians are being dehumanized, but the fact that this happened so blatantly that it became difficult to ignore.

If the international community was really against colonial dehumanization, history would have taken a different direction since 1947 with the UN Partition Plan. Palestinians were treated as a political obstacle rather than a people with equal rights.

From the Nakba of 1948 to the current war in Gaza, world powers have contributed to the normalization of violence and occupation.

Today, as Palestinians continue to face bombing, displacement and mass death, international responses remain selective. To speak for the rights of foreign activists while remaining silent about Palestinian civilians burning under the rubble is itself a form of dehumanization.

Ben-Gvir did not only expose the Israeli policy of dehumanization. He also highlighted the moral hypocrisy of Israel’s allies and the readiness of the international community to tolerate this reality. square

Source: prizrenpost

The selective morality of international diplomacy and the normalization of violence against Palestinians By Ramona Wadi, Middle East Monitor Colonialism is, in essence, a process of dehumanization.
