Half of the world’s languages \u200b\u200bare considered at risk of extinction. Just like the animal species that are disappearing and we did not protect them, we are even the main causes, even with the languages we speak, the same phenomenon is happening.<\/p>\n
Since 1950 until today, 244 languages have already disappeared, and if we do not raise awareness, in the next 40 years we will lose three times as many of them.<\/p>\n
In the world, 7000 different languages are classified, and currently 44% of them are considered at high risk of never being spoken again.<\/p>\n
Many of them are actually minority languages, and in all cases are spoken by about a thousand people.<\/p>\n
But the loss of a language is not only a cultural fact, but often reflects a deep all-round uprooting.<\/p>\n
The history of the USA is a typical example, where the marginalization of indigenous peoples led to the loss of many languages, and today the different communities that seek to re-enforce their identity, start precisely from their idiom.<\/p>\n
In Europe, there is the European Charter of Local and Minority Languages, an instrument that offers their protection and tutelage, but which many countries that have signed it have not yet ratified.<\/p>\n
A factor that is considered negative and damaging is digital Anglocentrism.<\/p>\n
The phenomenon has worsened the use of languages, as the systems AI has left out many languages that are spoken by millions of people around the Earth, but are not represented.<\/p>\n
And the situation is already critical for those languages that are in danger of extinction, which will worsen their situation by the ever wider spread of AI systems.<\/p>\n
