The US has reinstated sanctions against the UN special rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, days after lifting them due to a court order, Anadolu reports.<\/p>\n
An update on the Treasury Department website on Wednesday shows that Albanese had been re-listed on the list of specially designated nationals.<\/p>\n
US District Judge Richard Leon ruled on May 13 that the Trump administration likely violated Albanese’s free speech rights by sanctioning her for criticizing U.S. ally Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, granting a preliminary injunction against the sanctions.<\/p>\n
On Friday, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit issued an administrative stay of Leon’s decision, paving the way for the government to reinstate Albanese’s sanctions designation.<\/p>\n
Albanese, an Italian citizen, was sanctioned by the US in July 2025 after she encouraged the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague to pursue war crimes prosecutions against Israeli officials amid Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.<\/p>\n
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Albanese for waging a “political and economic war campaign” against the US and Israel, following a report by her identified corporations that allegedly facilitate the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Palantir.<\/p>\n
Albanese has served as the UN Human Rights Council’s special rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories since 2022, monitoring violations of human rights violations against Palestinians.<\/p>\n
Sanctions barred Albanese from entering the U.S., accessing the U.S. banking and payment systems, and engaging in business with anyone living in the country.<\/p>\n
Albanese’s husband, World Bank economist Massimiliano Cali, and their American daughter filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in February.<\/p>\n
Israel has killed more than 72 thousand Palestinians and has injured over 172,000 more in two years of a brutal offensive since October 2023, which has also caused widespread destruction affecting 90 percent of civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n
In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.<\/p>\n
Israel also faces a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its war in the enclave.<\/p>\n
