Condemning what he called foreign interference in Brazil’s internal affairs, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized the US, declaring that his country will not be treated “like children” after the US unilaterally designated two Brazilian “criminal gangs” as terrorist organizations, just hours after his main political rival visited Washington, Anadolu reports.<\/p>\n
“We will not accept to be treated like children. We will not accept to we are treated as if we were a second-rate country,” Lula said during a speech at the inauguration of a chemical fertilizer factory in the northeastern municipality of Laranjeiras.<\/p>\n
The diplomatic standoff erupted after President Donald Trump’s administration officially declared Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV) as terrorist entities. The move followed a high-level visit to Washington by Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and President Lula’s main rival in the October presidential election, which was hosted by President Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n
At the same time as President Lula’s speech, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official diplomatic note, warning that Brazil will not tolerate arbitrary external measures under under the pretext of security cooperation.<\/p>\n
Brazil warned that the unilateral labeling of the Trump administration could directly harm the exchange of intelligence and information.<\/p>\n
“Unilateral and non-negotiated measures weaken the fight against criminals, they reduce the capacity for information exchange between police forces and create actions that endanger the lives of innocent people. National sovereignty is not negotiable. It is Brazilians who determine that how crime is classified and fought within Brazil, using their institutions, laws and security forces,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
Lula accused his rival Bolsonaro of treason, stressing that he is seeking American intervention in Brazil’s internal security issues.<\/p>\n
“The security of our people is too important to be politically manipulated by traitors who try to confuse these issues. It is shameful that, once again, members of the Bolsonaro family do travel to the US to seek foreign intervention, from pseudo-patriots with ties to organized crime who are asking foreign authorities to intervene in Brazilian affairs,” Lula said.<\/p>\n
Lula acknowledged that the PCC and CV are “truly terrorists” for millions of Brazilians living in vulnerable urban peripheries, where they exercise control through brutal territorial violence, but insisted that Brazil has the legal framework, sovereign resources and police capacity to deal with them. dismantle these networks without external dictates.<\/p>\n
Lula said that if Washington really wants to help Brazil in the fight against transnational crime, it should “start by extraditing the leaders of Brazilian gangs who live comfortably in Miami”.<\/p>\n
