When the peace agreement is just a joke!<\/p>\n
An Israeli combat soldier witnessed the celebration of his comrades cheering and congratulating each other. Why?<\/p>\n
They had just rammed a vehicle carrying Palestinians traveling near the Israeli-controlled part of the Gaza Strip, killing all of them, Yahoo News reports.<\/p>\n
He described how such scenes had become commonplace after a fragile cease-fire took effect in October.<\/p>\n
In the weeks he spent stationed in Gaza, he said, soldiers relished the opportunity to shoot passers-by or approached the so-called Yellow Line that divides the Strip into areas under Israeli and Palestinian control.<\/p>\n
As diplomatic efforts to consolidate an agreement stalled, three soldiers described a sense of confusion in the conflict-torn territory, with no clear rules of engagement around the Yellow Line.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a real jungle,\u201d said a soldier in his twenties.<\/p>\n
After the ceasefire, the command was: \u201cIf anyone crosses line, shoot.\u201d The soldiers, deployed across Gaza between October and January, who have since returned to civilian life, spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of stigma.<\/p>\n
They said they are coming forward because they are angry and saddened by what they have seen.<\/p>\n
They said some commanders verbally supported the deal, while privately expressing their desire to continue fighting.<\/p>\n
Sometimes soldiers were too far away or acting too quickly to know who they were shooting at, concerns repeated by a group of veteran whistleblowers.<\/p>\n
The soldiers’ testimony is a rare look at events in the Israeli-controlled part of Gaza since the deal took effect seven months ago.<\/p>\n
Journalists documented the shooting of Palestinian civilians, including children playing, near the Yellow Line, and soldiers say the killings did not never seemed to stop amid the fragile deal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe so-called cease-fire is a joke,\u201d one soldier told reporters.<\/p>\n
When the cease-fire took effect, Israel withdrew troops to the buffer zone marked by the Yellow Line, taking control of just over half of the Strip.<\/p>\n

More than 900 people have been killed in Gaza since the cease-fire began, dozens of them near or across the Yellow Line, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.<\/p>\n
The ministry did not say how many were militants, but the dead included men and children of unarmed.<\/p>\n
The Israeli military says most of those killed posed a threat to soldiers when they crossed the line.<\/p>\n
But soldiers who spoke to reporters and to Breaking the Silence, a whistleblower group that collects soldiers’ testimonies, say soldiers were sometimes too far away, too fast and too pressured to assess the situation.<\/p>\n
One soldier said he was stationed a few hundred meters from the Yellow Line and saw soldiers kill several people who tried to cross it.<\/p>\n
Soldiers who shoot or order drone strikes don’t always know who is crossing the line, he said.<\/p>\n
Breaking the Silence says the general rules of engagement are extremely lenient, especially for those crossing the line, and the command in many areas is “shoot to kill.”<\/p>\n
Executive director Nadav Weiman, a veteran who served in Gaza but not this war, said that the distance to the target and the tendency of soldiers to pull the trigger quickly can be a problem.<\/p>\n
According to him, the orders and policies of senior military commanders “created a reality in which countless civilians were killed and are being killed for crossing invisible lines.”<\/p>\n
In a report for “Breaking the Silence,” one soldier describes instructions to units for anyone crossing the Yellow Line: “eliminate another soldier, who was stationed in Gaza for weeks after the cease-fire, said the commander’s message was that the line must be held at all costs. and that the Palestinians should know where he was.<\/p>\n
