Jos\u00e9 Mourinho will return to manage Real Madrid if Florentino Perez wins the club’s presidential election on Sunday, the incumbent confirmed on Wednesday as he campaigns for another term at the club’s helm.<\/p>\n
P\u00e9rez, who faces renewable energy entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme in the club’s first contested election in 20 years, made the campaign announcement via his social media channels in a short video. with Mourinho simply saying: “Yes!”<\/p>\n
The clip was followed by the tagline “So much history to be made”, a not-so-subtle reminder of the Portuguese coach who guided Madrid to a record number of points in La Liga in 2012, but who last won the league title with Chelsea in 2015, writes The Guardian.<\/p>\n
Mourinho’s transfer comes after a disappointing domestic season in which which Barcelona secured two consecutive league titles. Madrid, 15-time Champions League winners, have also been eliminated from Europe’s biggest club competition at the quarter-final stage in the past two seasons, with a lack of major trophies prompting P\u00e9rez to call the election.<\/p>\n
P\u00e9rez’s announcement came as Riquelme appeared on Spanish TV program El Hormiguero, where he said Rodri, the Manchester City midfielder and captain of Spain, would be his first signing if chosen. He said he would also target Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and that former striker and club legend Ra\u00fal would be his sporting director.<\/p>\n
Since leaving Chelsea, Mourinho’s trophy collection has been more modest. He won the League Cup and Europa League with Manchester United, and later led Roma to the Conference League title.<\/p>\n
His subsequent career has also taken him to Tottenham, Fenerbahce and Benfica, where he is under contract until June 2027 and previously said the Portuguese club had proposed a renewal.<\/p>\n
