Donald Trump defended Rex Tillerson Sunday as a \u201cworld class player\u201d in face of criticism the oil executive should not be in charge of the State Department.<\/p>\n

The president-Elect is considering Tillerson, a powerful oil executive who is close with Russia leader Vladimir Putin, for the Secretary of State.<\/p>\n
Trump named Tillerson, as well as Sen. Bob Corker and Mitt Romney, as his short-list of candidates during an interview on Fox News Sunday. The top-level nomination is expected this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s much more than a business executive,\u201d Trump told Fox News Sunday. \u201cI mean, he\u2019s a world-class player. He\u2019s in charge of, I guess the largest company in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump said he values Tillerson\u2019s ties to Russia \u2013 which the CIA has blamed for interfering with the US election to propel Trump to the White House.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo me, a great advantage is he knows many of the players, and he knows them well,\u201d Trump said. \u201cHe does massive deals in Russia. He does massive deals for the company \u2014 not for himself \u2014 for the company.\u201d<\/p>\n
But both Democratic and Republican senators have cast doubt about Tillerson, who was awarded Russia\u2019s \u201corder of friendship\u201d honor by Putin.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing a \u2018friend of Vladimir\u2019 is not an attribute I am hoping for from a #SecretaryOfState \u2013 MR,\u201d Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted.<\/p>\n
\u201cReports that Rex Tillerson could be nominated to be our nation\u2019s top diplomat is alarming and absurd. With Rex Tillerson as our Secretary of State, the Trump administration would be guaranteeing Russia has a willing accomplice in the President\u2019s Cabinet guiding our nation\u2019s foreign policy,\u201d said Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.).<\/p>\n
Trump Sunday also touted his work to elect the 52nd GOP senator in Louisiana\u2019s election Saturday.<\/p>\n
