Robin van Persie will no longer continue in charge of Feyenoord. The club from Rotterdam has announced on Sunday that it has terminated cooperation with the 42-year-old technician, after about a year and a half in the management of the team.<\/p>\n
The legend of Dutch football, known for his career at Arsenal, Manchester United and Fenerbah\u00e7e, leaves even though he managed to end the season in the second position of the Eredivisie, a result that ensured Feyenoord participation in the Champions League for the next season. However, the team was unable to challenge for the title, which ended up in the hands of PSV.<\/p>\n
Technical director Devy Rigaux expressed his gratitude for Van Persiet’s contribution, praising his work during his time in charge of the team. According to him, after a detailed analysis of the season, the leaders decided that the club should enter a new phase with a different coach.<\/p>\n
“Robin van Persie has given everything for the club during a year and a half. He deserves praise for the way he finished a difficult season and for securing the second place in the championship”, declared Rigaux.<\/p>\n
However, the Feyenoord leaders assessed that the results and the way the team plays require a change in on the eve of the new season.<\/p>\n
“Our conclusion was that it is better to start the next season with a new coach”, he added.<\/p>\n
The performances in the European arena also influenced the decision. Feyenoord were stopped by Fenerbah\u00e7e in the last qualifying phase for the Champions League, then disappointed in the Europa League. The team recorded just two wins in eight group stage matches, against Sturm Graz and Panathinaikos, suffering six defeats.<\/p>\n
Van Persie remains one of the biggest names in Dutch football. He made more than 100 appearances with the Dutch national team and scored 50 goals, leaving an important mark on his country’s football history.<\/p>\n
