Researchers found that adding a small amount of movement to your daily routine, such as brisk walking, cycling or stair climbing, could help prevent around one in ten premature deaths, according to the BBC.

The findings highlight that even people who are unable to follow regular exercise programs or attend gyms can benefit significantly from increased physical activity during the day.

The study was based on analysis of data from around 150,000 adults from Great Britain, the United States of America and the Scandinavian countries.

According to the lead author of the research, Professor Ulf Ekelund from the Norwegian School of Sport, the results showed that even very small changes in the level of physical activity can bring big benefits to public health. Although the World Health Organization continues to recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, the study suggests that any extra movement is valuable and can reduce the risk of chronic disease and early death.

Another important aspect of the study was the negative impact of prolonged sitting. The researchers found that reducing time spent sitting by just 30 minutes per day was associated with a 7% reduction in the risk of premature death at the population level. Experts warn that lack of physical activity remains one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other chronic health problems. For this reason, it is recommended that people break up long periods of sitting by making short movements during the day.

The benefits of physical activity are not limited to the heart and circulatory system. According to experts, exercise also helps reduce stress, improve mood, strengthen muscles and bones, and preserve cognitive functions as we age. These can be simple actions like climbing the stairs at a faster pace, dancing for a few minutes at home, power cleaning or doing some light exercise while on vacation.

Researchers point out that these activities are easy to integrate into the daily routine and can improve cardiovascular health, muscular endurance and metabolism.

Experts believe that the key to a more active life is not necessarily intensive, but creating sustainable habits that encourage daily movement. Simple actions like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking short distances instead of driving, or parking further away from your destination can bring significant benefits over time.

The researchers’ main message is that every movement counts and that even a few extra minutes of activity each day can contribute to a longer, healthier life.

Source: prizrenpost

Just five minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a day can have a significant impact on people’s health and longevity, according to a new study published recently.
