A team of scientists from Japan has developed new compounds based on vitamin K, which in laboratory studies have shown the ability to stimulate the formation of nerve cells.

However, experts emphasize that care should be taken with the interpretation of these results. So far, research has only been carried out in cells and animal models, while there is still no drug approved for use in humans.

New compound from vitamin K and components of vitamin A

The team from Shibaura Institute of Technology has developed 12 new compounds based on vitamin K. The researchers combined this vitamin with components related to vitamin A, creating new analogs, one of which was called Novel VK.

In laboratory experiments, these compounds showed greater ability than natural vitamin K to induce the conversion of neural progenitor cells into neurons. According to the researchers, some of them were about three times more effective in this process compared to ordinary vitamin K.

This is important because the progressive loss of neurons is one of the main characteristics of neurodegenerative diseases, which impair the memory, cognitive abilities, movement and independence of patients.

Vitamin K is mainly known for its role in blood clotting and bone health, but in recent years it is also being studied for its possible impact on the nervous system. nerve.

The new composition Novel VK is designed to act more strongly in the processes related to the development and protection of nerve cells. According to the researchers, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and affect molecular pathways related to neuronal differentiation.

In this process, mGluR1 receptors are also mentioned, which are related to nerve signaling and promoting the transformation of neural stem cells into neurons. This makes the discovery interesting for future research in the field of nerve tissue regeneration.

Hope for the future, but not an immediate “miracle”

Currently, drugs used for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s mainly aim to relieve symptoms or slow the progression of the disease. They do not restore lost nerve tissue and do not heal brain damage.

Exactly for this reason, the discovery of compounds that can stimulate the formation of neurons is seen as a very promising direction. However, scientists warn that the road from laboratory results to a safe and effective therapy for humans is long.

No drug based on these vitamin K compounds has been approved so far for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases in humans.

According to Professor Yoshihisa Hirota, the new vitamin K compounds have shown significantly greater power to induce the differentiation of neural progenitor cells into neurons, compared to natural vitamin K.

He points out that, if these results are confirmed in further studies, such compounds could help in the development of regenerative therapies, which in the future would aim not only to slow down the disease, but also to regenerate damaged nerve cells.

For now, however, the discovery should be seen as an important scientific step, not as a ready-made treatment. The results are promising, but large studies, including clinical trials in humans, are needed to prove the safety and effect of these compounds.

If one day these results can be repeated in humans, then we could talk about a very big development in neurology. Until then, Novel VK remains a promising laboratory discovery, opening a new direction of research in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Source: prizrenpost

Laboratory studies show that the new substance can stimulate the formation of nerve cells, but it has not yet been tested as a therapy in humans Is a new path being opened in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s?
