In some cases, the lack of fluids can also affect kidney function

When the sun “burns”, the child usually runs on the beach, jumps in the pool, plays football with his friends and does not want to stop the fun even for a minute. Parents offer him water, but the answer is often the same: “I’m not thirsty!”. A few hours later, the child becomes tired, irritable, complains of a headache or faints. Most of the parents at that moment think that it is a matter of ordinary fatigue from the game, but the reason can be much more serious.

Doctors warn that during the summer heat one of the most underestimated health problems can be dehydration. What many parents don’t know is that serious dehydration doesn’t just affect a child’s energy and mood. In some situations, it can even endanger the organs that work constantly “in the background” – the kidneys.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the child will ask for water on its own when the body needs it. In reality, especially during play, many children ignore the feeling of thirst. They are so focused on having fun that they don’t notice the warning signals their body is sending them. For this reason, dehydration often develops gradually and without being noticed.

The problem becomes even more pronounced when staying in high temperatures, sports activities, long car trips, staying at the beach, high body temperature, diarrhea and vomiting.

What happens in the body when dehydration occurs and can the kidneys be at risk?

Water is not only important so that the child does not feel thirsty. It enables the normal functioning of all organs, regulates body temperature, transports nutrients and helps the kidneys to remove harmful metabolic products from the body.

When the body loses more fluids than it takes in, the amount of blood reaching the kidneys begins to decrease. The body then tries to conserve every drop of water. Urine becomes darker, urination less frequent, while the kidneys work under greater load.

In most cases, mild dehydration passes without permanent consequences if fluids are replaced in time. However, in more pronounced dehydration, the situation can become serious. If the body does not have enough fluids for a longer period of time, blood flow through the kidneys can decrease significantly. In more severe cases, a temporary disorder of their function may occur, while sometimes even hospital treatment is needed.

Particularly sensitive are babies and young children, children with chronic kidney disease, children with high fever, those with diarrhea or vomiting, as well as young athletes during intense training in the heat.

Signs that parents often overlook

Dehydration does not always begin dramatically. On the contrary, the first symptoms can be very mild and vague.

Parents should be attentive if the child urinates significantly less often than usual, if the urine is dark yellow in color, if the child looks extremely tired, complains of a headache, has dry mouth and lips, becomes irritable or sleepy, or has no energy to play.

In babies, dry diapers for a longer period, sunken eyes and activity may appear. decreased.

Can a child become dehydrated even when he is constantly in water?

Many parents think that a child who is constantly in water cannot become dehydrated. This is completely wrong.

During swimming, running on the beach or sports activities, the child sweats even when he is in the water. For this reason, fluid loss is often not noticed. For this very reason, experts advise that the child be offered water regularly, even when he does not ask to drink and does not seem thirsty.

There are situations when dehydration is no longer a problem that can be solved with just one more glass of water. Urgent medical check-up is necessary if the child cannot keep fluids down due to vomiting, urinates very infrequently, becomes excessively sleepy, appears confused, has sunken eyes and very dry mouth, or refuses to drink.

In such cases, quick response can prevent more serious complications.

Although parents carefully choose sunscreen, hats, swimwear and water toys during the holidays, experts point out that the most important summer “accessory” is often just an ordinary bottle of water.

Dehydration is not just temporary thirst. When neglected, it can burden the entire organism, including the kidneys, which every day silently perform one of the most important functions in the body.

Therefore, the message of the doctors is simple: the child may not always ask for water when his organism needs it, but the parents must offer it much earlier, before thirst appears. Sometimes, a few well-timed sips can make the difference between a smooth summer’s day and a health problem that requires urgent help.

Source: prizrenpost

Fatigue, headache, dark urine and drowsiness during the heat are not always common signs of summer.
