Uruguay’s national team is in an unenviable position ahead of the decisive match against Spain in the World Cup, which will be played in the early hours of tomorrow (Saturday), from 02:00 our time.<\/p>\n
Instead of preparing in peace, the team has been rocked by a rift between the players and coach Marcelo Bielsa. After draws with Saudi Arabia (1-1) and Cape Verde (2-2), Uruguay will most likely need a win against their strongest opponent to advance from Group H.<\/p>\n
According to the Espectador Deportes radio station, which is broadcast by the Globo portal, a group of players led by Real Madrid star Federico Valverde, Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte and Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur rebelled against selectors.<\/p>\n
The players have reportedly called Bielsa into a meeting and demanded a change in approach and style of play for the crucial match against Spain. They are unhappy with the amount and intensity of training, which they believe is the cause of injuries, and want the team to settle into a low block against Spain and look for opportunities on the counter-attack.<\/p>\n
Bielsa responded by calling a full-team meeting, where he announced that they planned to copy the Spaniards’ formation. A 48-minute meeting followed during which he defended his methods, the radio station claims.<\/p>\n
The Argentine pundit accused the players of trying to replace him since he left out national team legend Luis Suarez and did not invite Al-Qadsiah midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who has 70 caps for the national team, to the World Cup.<\/p>\n
He is also reported to have said that he had created the careers of several national team players, such as Martin Caceres and Maxi Araujo. His words caused anger among some of the players, who demonstratively left the meeting. Defender Jose Maria Gimenez tried to defuse the situation, but to no avail.<\/p>\n
The whole situation took on added weight after one of the directors of the Uruguayan Football Federation reportedly told the aforementioned radio station that Bielsa would leave the bench “in less than a month”.<\/p>\n
Despite the dramatic events, neither coach Bielsa nor player Rodrigo Aguirre mentioned the conflict in the press conference before match.<\/p>\n
