A bipartisan group of US lawmakers is pushing for a European security meeting of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to be held next year in South Carolina, rather than Serbia.<\/p>\n
Their push highlights disagreements among Republicans in the US Congress, as well as Washington’s complicated relationship with Serbia.<\/p>\n
Republican Congressman Joe Wilson will present a joint resolution by 41 congressmen, which calls for the 2027 annual session of the OSCE to be held next summer in Charleston, South Carolina, rather than in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, which is favored by other influential Republicans.<\/p>\n
Reuters reported seeing a copy of the resolution ahead of its release.<\/p>\n
Charleston and Belgrade are candidates to host the meeting. annual meeting of OSCE member states from Europe, Central Asia and North America, an organization that in recent years has focused on managing the consequences of the Russian occupation of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly has accepted the offer of the National Assembly of Serbia to host the annual session in 2027 in Belgrade, which should gather more than 300 members of parliament from the parliaments of the 57 member states of OSCE.<\/p>\n

Although US lawmakers on both sides of the debate have presented various logistical and practical arguments for their preferred country, some of which have little to do with geopolitics, the disagreement also reflects a broader debate. widely in Washington regarding Serbia, which maintains close relations with both Moscow and the Trump administration.<\/p>\n
Some lawmakers, concerned by Belgrade’s deep economic ties to Russia, have called for a more adversarial approach to Serbia, which is a significant buyer of Russian energy and has refused to join Western sanctions against the United States’ adversary.<\/p>\n
Other lawmakers have stressed the need for continued engagement with the Serbian government, in order for the country – which is aiming for membership in the European Union – to fully align with the West.<\/p>\n
In an interview, Wilson, who co-chairs a quasi-congressional body focused on Europe known as the Helsinki Commission, stressed that holding the meeting in the United States would send a signal of America’s commitment to its OSCE allies.<\/p>\n
He also criticized Serbia for its stance. hostile towards Kosovo, an ally of the United States, whose independence Belgrade continues to oppose.<\/p>\n
