Astronomers have discovered for the first time a natural sugar similar to that found in raspberries, in a cloud of interstellar dust and gas near the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way.

It is erythrulose, a molecule consisting of four carbon atoms, which plays a role in Earth’s biological processes. The discovery was made by a team of researchers led by the Center for Astrobiology in Spain and was published in the scientific journal “Nature Astronomy”.

To identify this molecule, astronomers used two radio telescopes in Spain and analyzed the signals coming from the molecular cloud G+0.693−0.027, located near the center of the Milky Way. They compared the molecular signatures detected in space with models of erythrulosis created in the laboratory.

Scientists say the discovery is important because it shows that relatively complex molecules associated with life can form in space before the formation of stars and planets.

“This discovery shows that complex sugars can be synthesized in interstellar space, before stars and planets are born,” said astronomer Izaskun Jiménez-Serra, lead author. of the study.

So far, researchers have identified more than 340 molecules in the interstellar space of the Milky Way, but no sugars have been discovered in this environment before.

According to experts, this discovery supports the theory that some organic compounds necessary for life may have come to Earth from space through asteroids and comets. Other sugars, such as ribose and glucose, have previously been discovered in meteorites and in samples of the asteroid Bennu.

Scientists believe that erythrulose may be just one of many important molecules that may be discovered in the future, opening up new possibilities for understanding how life may have started in the universe.

Source: prizrenpost

A new scientific discovery could change the way we understand the origins of life.
