The miracle that has attracted the attention of specialists around the world. In Brisbane, Australia, 34-year-old Jenitar Na’amoana has given birth to four identical girls, in a pregnancy that doctors consider a 1 in 15 million chance.<\/p>\n
“These babies are truly special. All four shared the same placenta, but each had its own amniotic sac. They developed from a single fertilized egg, which then split into four embryos. It’s something extraordinary. We estimate that such a pregnancy only happens once in about 15 million cases and, to our knowledge, it has not happened before in Australia,” claimed doctor Alexa Bendall.<\/p>\n
The four babies, Emily, Harriet, Alexa and Catherine, were born by caesarean section at 28 weeks and four days of pregnancy. Because they shared a single placenta, the pregnancy was considered very high-risk for both the mother and the babies.<\/p>\n
“This was a very high-risk pregnancy. When several babies share the same placenta, the risk of complications is great. There can be problems with development, with blood circulation between the babies, and even a risk to their lives and the mother’s life. Hence the fact that we have four healthy babies, born at 28 weeks and four days, it is an extraordinary result”, said, among others, the doctor Alexa Bendall.<\/p>\n
For the Na’amoana family, the news was completely unexpected. The couple already had four children and had not planned another pregnancy. When they found out they were expecting not one, but four babies, the reaction was shocking.<\/p>\n
“It was a big surprise. Jenitar already had four children at home, including a baby she was still breastfeeding. When they found out they were expecting four babies instead of one, they were surprised,” said the doctor.<\/p>\n
The four girls are receiving treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Brisbane Hospital, where doctors expect them to continue developing until they ready to go home.<\/p>\n
Their case is being considered one of the rarest in the modern history of obstetrics and an important success for the Australian medical team.<\/p>\n
