A total of 128 journalists have been killed worldwide during 2025, over half of them in the Middle East, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) announced on Thursday.
IFJ Secretary General Anthony Bellanger told AFP that this number represents “a global red alert” and not just a statistic. He expressed particular concern for the Palestinian territories, where 56 journalists have been killed during the year in the wake of Israel’s war in Gaza.
“Such a large number of killings in such a short time and in such a small area has not been seen before,” Bellanger said.
Journalists have also been killed in countries such as Yemen, Ukraine, Sudan, Peru and India. The IFJ condemned impunity for the perpetrators of these attacks, warning that the lack of justice encourages violence against journalists.
Meanwhile, the IFJ reported that 533 journalists are currently in prison worldwide, more than double the number five years ago. China leads the list with 143 imprisoned journalists, including in Hong Kong.
According to the IFJ, differences with other organizations such as Reporters Without Borders and UNESCO are related to different methods of counting victims. /message
