Iran’s Speaker of the Parliament: There are still big gaps with the US despite the progress in the talks

The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, said today that big differences remain between Tehran and the United States, despite progress in negotiations, Anadolu reports.

In statements broadcast by state television, Qalibaf said that some issues with the US have been resolved, but the main points remain unresolved.

“We have reached conclusions on some issues, but there are still big gaps on others and we are far from a final agreement”, he said.

Qalibaf stressed that Iran’s approach is based on mutual commitments, step by step, from both sides.

“It should not happen that we fulfill our obligations and then the other side does nothing in return”, he said.

He added that Iran has disagreements with the US over Tehran’s nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz, but stressed that his country remains committed to achieving a lasting peace.

“We have good will for a lasting peace,” he said.

Qalibaf also stated that the US-Israeli war did not achieve its objectives.

“Donald Trump did not achieve his objective of regime change and the destruction of our offensive and missile capabilities. Iran is not Venezuela,” he said.

The first round of talks between Iran and the US was held in Pakistan last weekend, while efforts for another session in Islamabad are ongoing. Fighting has been suspended since Pakistan brokered a two-week ceasefire on April 8.
