Iranian President: Tehran will not engage in talks under pressure or blockade

The President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has stated that Tehran will not engage in talks under pressure, threats or blockades, stressing that the rebuilding of trust requires the cessation of hostile measures and guarantees that they will not be repeated, reports Anadolu.

According to the Iranian presidency, in a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, President Pezeshkian said that reaching a common base and creating an environment suitable for effective dialogue are essential for any progress.

He said that previous negotiations have only deepened public mistrust in Iran and that discussions of dialogue in parallel with sanctions, pressure and blockade undermine trust between the parties.

Pezeshkian stressed that halting hostile policies and ensuring that they are not repeated are necessary conditions for resolving disputes.

He also said that the increased military presence further complicates the situation and undermines the necessary climate for dialogue.

The statements come as Pakistan continues efforts to revive stalled talks between Iran and the US after weeks of escalation in the region.

The first round of talks were held in Islamabad two weeks ago but failed to produce an agreement to end the war that began on February 28 and has since spread across the Middle East.

The talks followed a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8, which was later extended by US President Donald Trump.
