The inflation rate in Germany increased to 2.9 percent in April 2026, the highest level since January 2024, the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) announced today, Anadolu reports.
The increase in general consumer prices intensified as inflation stood at 2.7 percent in March 2026 and 1.9 percent in February.
“General inflation increased for the second month in a row as a result of another increase in energy prices that was due to the war in Iran. Consumers are especially feeling the continued price pressure related to motor fuels,” said Ruth Brand, president of the Federal Statistics Office.
Compared to March 2026, consumer prices rose by 0.6 percent in April. Prices for energy and household fuel in April were 10.1 percent higher than the same month a year earlier.
Germany’s Economy Ministry last month cut its growth forecasts for 2026 and 2027 while raising inflation forecasts, citing the impact of higher energy costs and weaker external demand.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned on April 13 that the ongoing war with Iran will cause long-term damage to the global economy, with Germany bracing for a prolonged economic strain.
“We will feel the consequences of this war for a long time, even after it is over,” Merz said during a media conference in Berlin.
Last year, Germany approved a €500 billion infrastructure fund aimed at boosting investment and support. growth after a prolonged period of economic weakness.
