Saif Abukeshek’s account of the hours of arrest by the Zionists
Global Sumud flotilla activist Saif Abukeshek is planning legal action against Israel for alleged human rights violations during its detention after the Gaza-bound flotilla was captured.
“Israel violated every right from the moment we were captured until the moment we were released,” Abukeshek told Spanish public broadcaster RTVE in an interview on Monday, Catalan News reported.
Abukeshek, who arrived in Barcelona airport on Sunday evening, May 10, said he plans to travel to Turkey on Tuesday, May 12, to rejoin the flotilla. He said he was subjected to hours of interrogation at the detention center that included “insults and threats”.
“I was told I would be left there for years and that I would never see my mother again. They would wake me up at all hours and blindfold me,” he said.
Abukeshek said he began a hunger strike, gradually refusing food, water and speaking. The activist said he lost 15 kilograms after going 12 days without eating and six days without drinking.
“The mobilizations at sea are just one element among the many actions taking place. We must continue the fight in the streets,” he added, calling on people to take part in demonstrations planned for the weekend in Barcelona.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed in a post on the X social network on Sunday that it had deported the flotilla activists. Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Ávila. The ministry said Israel “will not allow any violation of the legal naval blockade of Gaza”.
Abukeshek, who is Catalan-Palestinian, and Brazilian activist Ávila were transferred to an immigration detention center before their deportation from Israel took place.
The Sumud Global Flotilla described their release on Saturday as a “victory for popular mobilization and continued pressure throughout Amnesty International welcomed the release of Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Ávila, calling it “encouraging news for human rights” and an exception to what it described as Israel’s policy of “arbitrary detention”. /tesheshi
