Abdominal pain is one of the most common reasons to see a doctor, but experts warn that certain types of pain are not normal at all.

According to the Mayo Clinic, specific, recurring or sudden abdominal pain may indicate a more serious health problem that often begins quietly and goes unnoticed. Harvard Health adds that people often attribute abdominal pain to stress, food or bloating, but it can be an early sign of an illness that requires timely treatment.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, abdominal pain that always occurs in the same place, lasts for weeks, or gradually worsens is one of the most important warning signs that something serious is going on in the body.

Doctors emphasize pain that: appears and is severe, is sharp or sudden burning, spreading to the back or shoulder, accompanied by nausea, loss of appetite or fatigue, and worse after eating.

Most common serious causes that start with innocent pain

The Mayo Clinic states that the pain usually occurs in the upper right part of the abdomen, often after a fatty meal. The pain may radiate to the back or shoulder.

Harvard Health describes pain that starts around the navel and then spreads to the lower right side of the abdomen as an emergency.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the pain is often severe, constant and radiates to the back. It is often accompanied by nausea.

Johns Hopkins Medical Center states that it is a burning sensation in the upper abdomen that may improve or worsen after eating.

Harvard Health warns that the pain appears chronic, often with diarrhea, weight loss and fatigue.
