France captain Kylian Mbappe has declared that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo remain the two best footballers at the 2026 World Cup, playing down comparisons with himself and stressing that his priority is France’s success.
During a media conference, the Real Madrid striker was asked about the competition between football’s biggest stars and the possibility of breaking the record for the top goalscorer in history. “Messi is the best player, along with Cristiano, that’s clear. I’m just trying to help my team win another World Cup. Everything else is a topic for journalists,” said Mbappe. I knew that Leo would score, because he always scores. If you score goals, you get close to the records, but for me the most important thing is to win the World Cup,” he said.
Mbappe also spoke about the tactical evolution of modern football, assessing the influence that winning teams have on the way football is played.
“Teams that win always become an example for others. Once upon a time, everyone wanted to copy Barcelona, then Real Madrid and now PSG. But national football is completely different,” he said.
France is now preparing for the next match against Iraq, after starting the World Cup with a 3-1 victory against Senegal. Mbappe was the main protagonist of that challenge with two goals and is expected to lead “Les Bleus” again in search of qualification in the knockout phase./Express
