Robots instead of soldiers: where, why, who against whom?

China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has long been developing new combat tactics involving “robot wolves”.

These four-legged robots are designed to act as the front line in drone-led strikes, clearing obstacles and aiding operations on land and water.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aims to shift from “human wave” tactics to “intelligent maritime tactics,” using advanced technology to reduce human casualties and mimic “drone swarms.”

The 70 kg robots can fire accurately at distances of up to 100 meters and operate in inaccessible terrain, and exercises also include kamikaze drones.

In another military exercise, held in late December, which, according to media reports, is key to a possible attack on In Taiwan, the Chinese military tested these robots in simulated minefields. In such cases, soldiers walk behind the robots so they know it is safe for them.

Analysts point out that the robots are still able to navigate a combat environment. But these self-guided robots could overwhelm Taiwan’s defenses and raise serious questions about the rules of war. Because a robot cannot be held responsible.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense is responding by training soldiers in anti-drone warfare and actively procuring new weapon systems to shoot down drones. /tesheshi.com/
