At least nine people were killed and several others injured after a bus in India burst into flames and collided with a container truck early today, reports Anadolu.
Officials said the incident happened in Chitradurga, Karnataka state. The bus was carrying 32 passengers and was traveling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga when the accident occurred on National Highway 48.
“The bus was engulfed in flames under the impact of the crash,” Ravikanthe Gowda, a senior police official, told reporters, confirming the death toll. He said most of the victims were burned alive inside the vehicle and the injured passengers were shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Reports said the bus was hit by the truck, which was coming from the other side, after crossing the divider and colliding with the bus. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by the accident.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life due to an accident in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district,” Modi wrote on the platform of American social media company X.
“Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Hope the injured recover soon,” he said.
