The last hours before the deadline, still no solution for the president

Wednesday, March 4th 2026

There is only one day left until the end of the deadline for the election of the new president of Kosovo. The institutions must complete the process by March 5, in order to avoid early elections, as the term of the current president, Vjosa Osmani, comes to an end at the beginning of April.

The current president aims for a second term, although her name was proposed by the Vetëvendosje Movement in 2021. Currently, this party has not made public any concrete name for a candidate.

Despite several meetings between political leaders, including prime minister Albin Kurti and the presidents of the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza and Lumir Abdixiku, the discussions for a consensual candidate have failed.

Kurti held the third consecutive meeting with Abdixiku yesterday, but even this meeting did not produce a concrete result.

“The meeting went in a constructive atmosphere, but we still do not have the solution for the president”, declared Kurti after the meeting.

After this meeting, also gathers the parliamentary group of the LDK to examine the political situation.

The MP of the LDK, Besian Mustafa, stated that his party does not consider new elections necessary at this stage and remains open to contribute to the election of the president, but only through a political agreement.

“Today we have two options: a consensual candidate between all political parties, or a political agreement between the VV and the LDK”, he said Mustafa.

He emphasized that the parliamentary majority has 66 seats and without its votes the election of the president cannot be carried out.

As for the name of Vjosa Osmani, Mustafa said that LDK does not hesitate to declare, but emphasized that so far there is no official candidacy.

“With only 15 MPs, LDK cannot alone secure the 30 signatures needed for the proposal”, he added. him.

When asked about the name of Glauk Konjufca, Mustafa said that there has been no official action by VV for his candidacy.

“In principle, we are looking for a consensual candidate between all political parties, a non-party candidate, or a candidate as a result of a political agreement”, declared Mustafa.

In a meeting held on Saturday between Kurti and Hamza, the head of the PDK said that he has made an offer to the prime minister for an elected president. from his party.

“We have not managed to have a candidate who would be consensual, at least not so far, and who would go beyond the party proposals. Now, the good news is that the PDK has decided to propose a candidate and this of course gives hope for an interesting race in the next week”, declared Kurti after the meeting.

Hamza emphasized that he did not get Kurti’s consent for a name proposed by PDK.

According to the Constitution of Kosovo, in the first two rounds for the election of the president, 80 votes from 120 deputies are required, while in the third round, 61 votes are enough. A candidate must first secure at least 30 signatures to enter the race.

With the deadline approaching, it remains to be seen whether the parties will reach a last-minute deal, or the country will head for new elections.
