The UN announced on Monday that Israel has closed all border crossings to the Gaza Strip and suspended humanitarian movements to and near areas where Israeli forces remain deployed.
“Israeli authorities have closed all border crossings, including Rafah, and suspended humanitarian movements to and near areas where Israeli troops remain deployed in Gaza. They have also postponed the planned rotation of our humanitarian personnel,” the spokesman said. UN chief Stephane Dujarric at a media briefing.
“Medical evacuations and the return of people to Gaza have also been suspended as a result,” Dujarric said, stressing that people in Gaza depend on continued aid deliveries.
“People in Gaza, as you know, depend on a steady flow of humanitarian and commercial goods from abroad. Given the limited storage capacity and the destruction in this war-torn area, we and our partners have worked hard to maintain a stable and predictable flow of supplies despite ongoing restrictions, but this cannot continue under a complete blockade,” he said.
“It is imperative that all border crossings be reopened as soon as possible,” he added.
In the occupied West Bank, Dujarric said Israeli forces have kept most checkpoints closed, restricting movement between cities and Palestinian governorates and limiting access to livelihoods and services.
“International humanitarian law is clear. As we say every day and often, many times a day, civilians must be protected and their basic needs met, including through the unimpeded entry, movement and delivery of humanitarian aid,” the spokesman said.
On Saturday morning, the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran, claiming that aimed at eliminating the “threats” posed by the Iranian “regime”. In response, Iran hit Israel and US bases in the region with missiles and drones.
Israel declared a “special and immediate state of emergency” across the country.
