Science speaks: The brain does not fully mature before the age of 32

The idea that the human brain reaches full maturity at the age of 18 is being increasingly questioned by science. A new study, published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications, shows that brain development continues for many years after entering legal adulthood.

Researchers analyzed the brain activity of more than 3,000 individuals, from newborn babies to 90-year-old adults. Through this analysis, they identified five main stages of brain development, which are characterized by significant structural and functional changes. According to the results, these changes do not stop at the end of adolescence, but continue until around the age of 32.

One of the main findings is that the areas of the brain responsible for decision-making, impulse control and long-term planning are among the last to reach full maturity. This may explain why young people, although legally considered adults, often continue to develop important emotional and cognitive skills in later years.

This study has important implications not only for science, but also for how society understands growth, responsibility and education. He suggests that personal and mental development is a long and complex process that does not end at the age of 18.
