Scientists have discovered a species in Greenland that reaches up to 550 years
Greenland sharks can live long even with quite sick hearts. They can also have problems or pathologies of the vital organ that for humans could be fatal, and still manage to live in such conditions for hundreds of years.
The Greenland shark is a unique species and often the subject of study, as it is the longest-lived vertebrate that exists, reaching up to 500 years.
The secret, according to a team of experts, lies in durability, which in physiology is an indicator of the ability of an organism to maintain its functions stable even in the presence of a pathology.
But what must be understood is the ability to adapt and the molecular mechanisms that make this possible. According to the authors of the study, if such a thing is achieved, it can help deeply in medicine, as it can be a key to the aging process or pathologies in humans.
Cardiac tissue samples from 10 shark specimens were analyzed, comparing them with those of other, shorter-lived species.
It turned out that the damage to the heart was typical of aging and the consequences of the corresponding pathology, but their organism was healthy, which according to the authors, has only one answer, which is the ability to adapt despite internal problems.
