Germany has detected the hepatitis A virus in a frozen mixture of berries from Serbia, the European Rapid Alert and Notification System for Food (RASFF) announced. This virus causes viral hepatitis type A, or infectious jaundice type A.
As part of official market control, in a sample taken on April 20 this year, German authorities identified pathogenic microorganisms – the hepatitis A virus in a frozen mixture of berries originating in Serbia, according to a statement from the RASFF.
The health risk was assessed as serious and the product was reportedly withdrawn from the market and from consumers.
This is not the first time that hepatitis A virus has been detected in frozen fruits from Serbia.
According to RASFF data, a similar case was recorded on July 10, 2025, when Germany also found the same virus in frozen berry fruits imported from this country.
Also, in August 2022, hepatitis A virus was found in fruits frozen from Belgium, with Serbia listed as one of four countries of origin for the fruit.
