The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has announced that he is traveling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo amid the latest Ebola outbreak in the country, reports Anadolu.
“Ebola is back. I will be on the ground with our WHO teams, partners and extraordinary health workers who have never stopped fighting,” Tedros wrote on the American social network X.
He added that eastern Ituri province is bearing the brunt of the outbreak and that the Congolese government is leading the response to the crisis. The head of the WHO emphasized that Congo has consistently managed to overcome Ebola outbreaks in the past.
“Sixteen times this country has defeated Ebola. The 17th time will be no different. But we must act now, together,” said Tedros.
According to a recent report on the situation of the Ministry of Health, the number of suspected Ebola cases in Congo has exceeded 1,000 between a increasing cases in the eastern provinces.
Since the announcement of the outbreak on May 15, the report says the cumulative number of suspected cases has reached 1,077, with 17 confirmed Ebola victims.
The country’s authorities to prevent the spread of Ebola have suspended social activities in Ituri, considered the epicenter of the outbreak, including sports activities.
So far seven cases of confirmed and one victim in neighboring Uganda, which yesterday closed the border with DR Congo.
