The Supreme Court of Albania has not accepted the request of the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, for his release from detention, reports Anadolu.
In today’s session, the Supreme Court has upheld the decision of the Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime (GJPAKKO).
In a notice published on the website of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Albania, it is stated that in today’s session the court decided to uphold the decision of the Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime.
GJPAKKO had decided on February 24, 2026 that the “prison arrest” measure for Veliaj should remain in force, a measure which is opposed by the mayor of Tirana.
Erion Veliaj had asked the Supreme Court to be released from detention, while the courts had previously rejected the requests of for the repeal of the “prison arrest” measure.
Mayor Veliaj was arrested on February 10, 2025, suspected by the authorities of corruption and money laundering and is currently in custody.
Veliaj has been the mayor of the Municipality of Tirana since 2015, meanwhile he also held a position in the Government of Albania, as well as being an MP.
