Cristiano Ronaldo was very close to transferring to Milan in the summer of 2018, but the spectacular deal fell through at the last minute due to the withdrawal of the club’s owners at the time.

Milan’s former sporting director, Massimiliano Mirabelli, revealed this in an interview with journalist Carlo Pellegatti on YouTube, confessing that the Reds and Blacks had reached an agreement with both the Portuguese striker and also with Real Madrid, writes 04 Online.

According to Mirabelli, the project of the Chinese owners foresaw the approach of a superstar who would return Milan to the center of European football.

“The Chinese owners asked us to make a big hit in the market. We contacted Cristiano Ronaldo and reached an agreement to bring him to Milan”, declared Mirabelli.

He added that the contacts intensified after the final of Champions League between Juventus and Real Madrid in Cardiff, through manager Jorge Mendes.

“When we spoke to Ronaldo, together with Fassonen and Gattuso, he told us: ‘I will come to Milan. I have never won the Europa League and I want to win it’. He was very motivated and the fact that Milan did not play in the Champions League was not a problem for him”, revealed the former sporting director.

the deal with Real Madrid was practically closed, while the Spanish club demanded around 100 million euros for the Portuguese’s card. The main obstacle remained Ronaldo’s high salary, but according to him, this was also on the way to a solution.

“Everything was ready, but in the end the Chinese owners withdrew and the transfer failed”, concluded Mirabelli.

After the failure of negotiations with Milan, Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Juventus, where he spent three successful seasons, winning two Serie A titles and leaving his mark on Italian football. If the agreement with the Reds and Blacks had been realized, it would have changed the course of the history of Milan and Italian football./04 Online/
