Lionel Messi continues to write history with Argentina’s shirt at the 2026 World Cup.

The Argentinian striker scored one of the goals in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Cape Verde after extra time, in the match valid for the 1/16 stage of the tournament.

Messi found the net in the 29th minute of the match, after Lisandro Martínez’s assist, giving his national team the lead in a match that turned out to be much more difficult than expected.

With this achievement, the Argentine legend set another historical record, becoming the first player in history to score seven or more goals in two different editions of the World Cup.

The 39-year-old star also scored seven goals in the 2022 World Cup, while he has already managed to the same figure in the 2026 edition, once again confirming his status as one of the greatest footballers in the history of football.

Argentina secured qualification to the quarter-finals after the triumph over Cape Verde and will continue the journey towards the defense of the world champion title, with Messi remaining the main leader of the team led by Lionel Scaloni.
