Somalia has strongly rejected what it described as an illegal step by Israel to recognize its separatist region, Somaliland, as an independent state, calling this action a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, reports Anadolu.

In a press release, the Prime Minister’s Office reaffirmed its “absolute and non-negotiable commitment to sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity,” referring to the Interim Constitution of of Somalia, the UN Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union as a legal basis.

The government also reiterated support for Palestinian rights, saying Somalia “firmly rejects occupation, forced displacement, engineering “Somalia will never accept the transformation of the Palestinian people into a stateless people,” the statement said. It also warned against the establishment of foreign military bases that could draw the country into “delegated conflicts or import regional and international hostilities.” regional” and “exacerbate political and security tensions” in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

She warned that such moves could “create favorable conditions for terrorist groups to take advantage of political instability”.

The Somali government called on the international community to “act responsibly” and respect international law and the principles of non-interference.

She also called on Somali citizens to remain “united, vigilant and determined” in defending the country’s sovereignty and borders.

The government stressed that it will pursue “all necessary diplomatic, political and legal measures” to protect its internationally recognized borders.

Earlier in the day, Israel recognized Somalia’s breakaway region, Somaliland, as an independent state and sovereign.

Somaliland, which has been without official recognition since independence from Somalia in 1991, operates as a de facto independent administrative, political and security entity, with the central government unable to exercise control over the region and its leadership unable to secure international recognition of its independence.

The Somali government refuses to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, considers it an integral part of its territory and any agreement sees direct or engagement with him as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.
