The United Kingdom’s Foreign Office said today that efforts to send aid to Gaza reflect the “serious humanitarian situation” in the enclave, following Israel’s intervention in the Global Flotilla “Sumud”. resolved safely and in accordance with international law”.
“Efforts to send aid by sea show the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza”, said the spokesman. “Israel must do more to allow sufficient aid to enter Gaza, in line with the minimum agreed targets set out in the 20-point plan,” he added.
Israel’s foreign ministry said its naval forces have stopped and seized more than 20 ships from the Sumud Global Flotilla in international waters of the Mediterranean Sea and detained around 175 activists on board. The incident took place near the Greek island of Crete, hundreds of nautical miles from Israel.
The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, had set out two weeks ago from the Italian island of Sicily, with a total of 58 ships aiming to break Israel’s years-long blockade of Gaza.
Israel has imposed a heavy blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the population of about 2.4 million inhabitants on the brink of starvation. The Israeli army launched a brutal two-year offensive in Gaza in October 2023, killing over 72,000 people, wounding over 172,000 others and causing massive destruction in the besieged territory.
