Bulgaria will hold early parliamentary elections on April 19, President Iliana Iotova announced on Wednesday.

Last week Iotova chose Andrey Gyurov, the deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, to head an interim government tasked with preparing the way for early parliamentary elections.

These are the EU member state’s eighth elections in just five years and NATO.

The previous government resigned after weeks of street protests over its economic policies and failure to fight corruption.

“I will issue a decree to hold elections on April 19,” Iotova told a press conference on Wednesday, after meeting with Gyurov, who introduced members of his interim government.

Bulgaria, which joined the eurozone on January 1, is faced with prolonged political instability, with parties unable to form stable governing coalitions.
