Itching is one of the most frequent symptoms in the population and in chronic forms can significantly affect the quality of life, almost as much as chronic pain. It is not only related to skin problems, but in some cases it can be a sign of more serious diseases.

According to dermatology specialists, itching can accompany diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and scabies, but it can also be related to pathologies of internal organs such as liver and kidney failure, diabetes, neuropathies, psychiatric disorders, as well as cholestatic itching during pregnancy.

This problem is the focus of the National Congress of 99th of the Italian Society of Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (SIDeMaST), held in Rimini, where experts emphasized the importance of personalized treatment of patients.

“We are moving towards a major change in dermatology: we no longer treat only the symptom, but the patient individually,” said Paolo Amerio, professor of dermatology at the “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara.

In in the future, researchers aim to identify the specific mechanism of itching through a simple blood test, enabling the choice of the most accurate treatment with fewer side effects.

According to experts, itching affects not only the skin, but also mental health and social life, causing anxiety and depression in about 20% of patients, as well as sleep problems in about 60% of cases. It can also lead to social isolation due to misperceptions of its stickiness.
