German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has stated that Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s comment that Iran is “humiliating” the US was meant as a warning to Tehran to negotiate seriously, reports Anadolu.
“This was a clear warning to Tehran not to misunderstand the whole situation,” Wadephul told German broadcaster DW, adding that the current ceasefire should encourage Iran to reach an agreement and not delay the negotiations.
He warned that the US has deployed significant military capabilities in the region and that the failure of the talks could lead to a new escalation.
“What we see currently is that Tehran is buying time and not negotiating in the necessary way. This is bad behavior and they are misunderstanding their position and overestimating their role,” Wadephul said.
On Monday, Merz criticized the US for lacking an “exit strategy” in the war with Iran, noting that the Americans were being “humiliated” by the Iranian regime during the negotiations.
“The Iranians are clearly very good at negotiating, or rather very good at not negotiating, and then they let the Americans travel to Islamabad and leave without results,” Merz said during a discussion with high school students in the western city. Marsberg.
“An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by the so-called (Islamic) Revolutionary Guards,” he added.
These statements drew a sharp backlash from US President Donald Trump, who said Merz “doesn’t know what he’s talking about” and accused him of agreeing to Iran getting nuclear weapons.
“I’m doing something with Iran now that other countries or presidents have to do.” they should have done it a long time ago,” said Trump, adding that “it’s no wonder that Germany is doing badly, both economically and in other respects”.
