The First Lady of Turkey, Emine Erdogan, declared that the Palestinians believe in a Gaza that will rise from the ashes and that “we believe in the same thing”. She made these comments during the opening of the Palestinian exhibition “Kalanlar” (The Leftovers) in Istanbul, organized by the Kalyon Foundation and the Turkish Red Crescent.
Erdogan said that Gaza, although it has an area of only 365 square kilometers, has become the “center of the bloodiest, most brutal and systematic genocide in history”, a suffering that, according to her, “no conscience can endure”.
She stressed that about two million people still live in Gaza and are trying to survive in extremely difficult conditions. Remembering the Palestinian writer Refaat Alareer, killed in an Israeli airstrike in December 2023, Erdogan said that the duty of the international community is to tell the story of those who remain and to demand the implementation of international law.
“To protect Palestine means to protect humanity”, she said, adding that the Palestinian resistance also continues through art, knowledge and creativity, despite the siege and destruction.
At the ceremony the opening was also attended by the Palestinian ambassador in Ankara, Nasri Abu Jaish, leaders of the Turkish Red Crescent and representatives of the Kalyon Foundation. The exhibition will remain open until March 30 at Kalyon Culture, Istanbul. /message
