French prosecutors today requested a seven-year prison sentence for former president Nicolas Sarkozy in the appeal process for the issue of campaign financing from Libya, Anadolu.

Prosecutors have also requested a fine of 300,000 euros and a five-year ban from exercising public functions, according to broadcaster BFM TV.

The appeal process started in mid-March, after Sarkozy was sentenced last year. five years in prison for participating in a criminal organization.

Public prosecutors had previously requested that Sarkozy be found guilty of participating in a criminal organization, corruption and illegal campaign financing.

The final verdict is expected on November 30.

In February 2024, the Court of Appeal in Paris sentenced Sarkozy to one year in prison, with six months to be served in alternative forms, including holding a electronic bracelet, for illegally financing his failed 2012 presidential campaign. France’s Court of Cassation rejected his appeal in November, making the decision final.

The case marked Sarkozy’s second final conviction, following a three-year sentence — including a year under electronic surveillance — for corruption and illicit influence in the Bismuth case. This decision became final in December 2024. Sarkozy wore an electronic bracelet from 7 February to 12 May 2025, before being released on bail due to his age.
