FIFA under investigation for astronomical ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup

Ticket prices for the upcoming 2026 World Cup have sparked a major controversy in the United States, as prosecutors in New York and New Jersey launched an investigation into FIFA.

State Attorneys Letitia James and Jennifer Davenport said they have issued subpoenas for documents related to pricing and seating policies at stadiums, specifically MetLife Stadium, which will be called New Stadium. York New Jersey during the tournament.

The investigation centers on allegations that fans may have been misled about seating arrangements, as well as changes allegedly made after ticket sales went on sale.

In the initial sales phase, the stadium was divided into four zones (categories 1 through 4), with lower numbers indicating better seats. However, after the start of sales, FIFA introduced “new zones” and added forward sectors in each category.

Fans complained that ticket buyers for the new “premium” seats were actually moved to weaker positions, including seats away from the pitch or behind the gates.

According to available information, the starting ticket prices ranged from about $60, while the most expensive tickets for the final reached almost 11,000 dollars, while in the secondary market they reached multi-million dollar sums, reports CNN.

Officials in New York and New Jersey said that fans deserve a transparent and fair system of ticket sales, while FIFA states that its pricing policy reflects market demand and different categories of supply. /square
