The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security, Kaja Kallas, has said that the frequent election processes have influenced the postponement of a new round of dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia at the level of leaders.
She said that there was agreement from the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vučić, for a meeting, but now a new cycle of elections is approaching in Kosovo, which, according to her, postpones process.
“We had actually planned the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue at a high political level. I had received agreement from both leaders, both from Kosovo and Serbia, but now in Kosovo elections are approaching again, which of course pushes this process”, she told reporters, before the start of the meeting with the foreign ministers of the Western Balkans and Europe.
Kallas, however, said that he is working with the parties regarding the implementation of the agreements reached until now from the dialogue.
“However, I am working separately with both sides, so that we can continue with the implementation of the agreements that are already in force”, she said.
Asked what he expects from today’s meeting, Kallas said that they will discuss the enlargement and what I can do more to move forward with the reforms.
“We will also discuss the cooperation in dealing with threats hybrids, which are also present in the Western Balkans. We are also working with the countries of the Western Balkans, as they are also discussing security and defense, for example, with their foreign and security policy. implement”, she said.
Talking about the withdrawal of American troops from Germany, she said that the deployment of troops is constantly happening in Europe.
According to her, this is actually not something new.
“I think it is important that American troops stay in Europe as well, because they protect American interests in Europe, as well as European interests. This is the announcement made by the Pentagon. And of course, there is still time to see what this means in practice”, she said.
Kallas said that they support a diplomatic solution and are also engaged with the countries that mediate between the parties.
“We are also engaged with the Gulf countries, because we have the same concerns. Even if there is a ceasefire, there should also be long-term talks about the threats that Iran presents to the region. This is not only about the nuclear issue, where we have actually offered our expertise experts who have negotiated nuclear agreements before, but also with other threats that Iran poses to its neighbors; its representatives in the region, as well as the hybrid and cyber activities in Europe. We are also discussing that, when that moment comes, we will be part of the security architecture in the Persian Gulf, because we see this region as part of our immediate neighborhood,” he said she emphasized that for now the focus is on stopping the war and opening the Strait of Hormuz. “In this respect, of course, the Americans and Iran are negotiating directly with each other. We can only support them, but we cannot make decisions on their behalf,” she added. We use cookies to improve the experience and display ads (Google AdSense).
