The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed today that he has made a secret visit to the United Arab Emirates to meet with the leader of that country amid the war against Iran, reports Anadolu.
“In the midst of Operation Roaring Lion, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secretly visited the United Arab Emirates, where he met with the President of the Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed,” Netanyahu’s office wrote on the American social platform X.
Additional details were not officially announced, but the American television network CBS reported that the visit took place in late March, during the height of the US-Israeli war against Iran. A ceasefire was brokered in April and then extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported this week that the Emirates have secretly carried out attacks on Iran. One of the targets was a refinery on the Iranian island of Lavan, which was hit in early April.
The timing seems to match the fact that Netanyahu’s visit happened shortly before the Emirates launched the attack.
Iran responded by launching ballistic missiles and drones at the Emirates and Kuwait. The WSJ reported that Iran has targeted the Emirates more than any other country, including Israel, with more than 2,800 missile and drone strikes against the Gulf state.
The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, confirmed on Tuesday that Israel has sent Iron Dome anti-missile systems and personnel to the UAE during the war.
“I want to express a word of appreciation to the United Arab Emirates, the member the first of the Abrahamic Accords,” Huckabee said. “Just look at the benefits. Israel just sent them Iron Dome systems and personnel to help operate them,” he added.
The Abrahamic Accords are normalization agreements signed between Israel and several Muslim-majority countries during the first term of US President Donald Trump. Four countries have joined the peace accords — Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates were the first country to sign the agreements.
Huckabee said the move reflected “an extraordinary relationship between the Emirates and Israel based on the Abrahamic Accords”.
