The fascist declaration of the Serbian minister, Snezhana Paunović, about ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, was condemned in Kosovo, the region and the EU. But, during her interview for the Serbian Courier, there was another moment where the crime was normalized.

It was the moderator of the show, who, while interviewing the Serbian minister, who during her appearance said that if she was in the place of the former Serbian president, Slobodan Milosevic, she would have “ethnically cleansed Kosovo”, described the massacre of Prekaz as “liquidation” while also mentioning the minors, broadcast KosovaPress.

During the interview she stated “… on the other hand, the action of the Serbian police in the village of Prekaz i Poshthem in 1998, when the Serbian police liquidated not only the leader of the KLA, Adem Jashari, but also his entire family, including minors and women. Over 50 members of the Jashari family lost their lives.”

Using the term “liquidated” for the event To Prekaz, she tried to relativize the attack in Prekaz as a neutral or operational police action, while dozens of civilians, including women and children, were killed there.

The moderator herself admits in her statement that there were minors and women among the victims, which makes the use of language that avoids characterizing the event as a massacre of civilians even more controversial.

For many, such a wording risks relativize responsibility for the murder of members of the Jashari family, while the interview was conducted with a Serbian minister who had articulated harsh attitudes towards Kosovo.

The Prekazi massacre remains one of the most serious events of the war in Kosovo and a symbol of resistance, where over 50 members of the Jashari family were killed, including children, women and the elderly. The use of such terms in the reporting of such events continues to be the subject of debate because of the impact it has on the way history is understood and interpreted.
