The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, has condemned the “continuous disintegration of our alliance” as a “disastrous trend” amid the division within NATO over the stalled US-Israeli war against Iran, Anadolu reports.
“The biggest threat to the transatlantic community is not its external enemies, but the continuous disintegration of our alliance. We must all do whatever is necessary to overthrew this catastrophic trend,” Tusk wrote on the American social network X.
The Polish prime minister’s statement came hours after the US announced the decision to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany.
Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said the US is evaluating a possible reduction in military presence in Germany, after Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the US for lacking an exit strategy from the Iran war, stating that the Americans are being “humiliated” by the Iranian regime in negotiations.
Trump has also expressed dissatisfaction with Italy and Spain, stressing that he will “most likely” withdraw American forces from these countries. He said that when the US “needed them, they weren’t there,” referring to his war in Iran.
