The European Commission is preparing a revolution in petrol stations across the European Union. The EC, led by Ursula von der Leyen, is considering introducing the cheaper E20 fuel to combat the energy crisis caused by the war in the Middle East, German newspaper Bild.de exclusively reported today.
This is a fuel that contains 20 percent bioethanol. A prerequisite for its placement on the European market is a change in the EU’s Fuel Quality Directive.
Three members of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the European Parliament, experts on energy, climate and transport, received a letter from the Commission President, which Bild has seen.
Von der Leyen wrote to MEPs Peter Liese, Jens Gieseke and Norbert Lins, who have advocated since long on E20:
“Under current regulations, the maximum permitted ethanol content in petrol is 10 percent (E10). The Commission recognizes the role that higher biofuel blends can play in decarbonising existing fleets. As part of the review of the fuel policy framework, the Commission will consider the adoption of higher levels of ethanol (E20), taking into account in particular any issues related to potential suitability existing vehicle engines for this fuel and the need to encourage investment in advanced biofuels.”
This is a turning point and now the cheapest fuel can be introduced across Europe, writes Bild. Within the European People’s Party (EPP) group, this is being celebrated as a breakthrough.
Climate policy expert Peter Liese told Bild: “Biofuels are the key to reducing fuel costs. This happens immediately and without new infrastructure.” it already works today. Manufacturers such as BMW, VW and Mercedes have adopted E20 for newer engines,” Jens Gieseke (CDU), spokesman for transport policy for the EPP group, told Bild.
The current energy crisis has fueled discussions at many levels about the better use of biofuels. This includes not only premium gasoline, but also diesel. Canola oil is particularly in the spotlight as an alternative and locally produced fuel.
According to experts quoted by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, canola oil is almost of the same quality as diesel. Although canola oil has a slightly lower energy content per liter than diesel, its higher density makes it almost equal.
“Local bioethanol creates added value in the countryside and strengthens security of supply in Europe,” said Norbert Lins (CDU), vice-president of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. /tesheshi.com/
