Great Britain and several European countries have signed a new declaration, which aims to increase the effectiveness of the deportation of illegal immigrants, calling for courts to review the way they deal with migration issues.

The agreement was presented during a summit in Moldova, and warns that European democracy could be at risk if states fail to react more quickly to people-trafficking and modern pressures of

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described the agreement as a “common sense approach” and said it aims to prevent abuse of legal systems.

The declaration does not change existing human rights law, but represents a political signal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to take more into account the public interest and security of states in migration matters.

It it was signed by the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, and states that states have the sovereign right to determine their own immigration policies and to deport foreign nationals when they consider it to be in the public interest.

However, critics warn that this declaration could weaken human rights protections or have no real impact, as judges may disregard it in their decisions.
