The Turkish deep-sea drilling vessel Cagri Bey has arrived in Somalia for a “historic mission”, marking the start of Ankara’s first deep-sea drilling operation, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced today, Anadolu reports.
“The Cagri Bey vessel has arrived in Somalia for its historic mission,” Bayraktar said on Turkish social media platforms. NSosyal, adding that the operation will open “a whole new chapter in the energy history of both Turkey and Somalia”.
He said that Turkey is starting its first deep-sea drilling campaign abroad. “We seek God’s favor for our first overseas deep-sea drilling operation that goes beyond our borders,” Bayraktar said.
According to Turkey’s Energy Ministry, the Cagri Bey vessel will drill the Curad-1 well near Somalia and is expected to operate at a depth of 7,500 meters over a period of 288 days.
The ministry has described the campaign as the first activity of of Turkey’s deep-sea drilling abroad.
Minister Bayraktar said earlier this month that the ship would arrive in Somalia on Friday and that with the ship, Turkey would begin its first offshore drilling operation in the waters of the Horn of Africa country.
