Two to three cups of coffee a day reduce mental health disorders, study finds

A new study has shown that moderate coffee consumption, about 2–3 cups per day, may be associated with a lower risk of mental health disorders, especially in men.

The study, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, based on data from over 460,000 people, suggests that the benefits are related to coffee’s bioactive components and their anti-inflammatory effects.

On the other hand, researchers warn that excessive consumption, over 5 cups a day, may increase the risk of mental problems, emphasizing the importance of balance in consumption.

Coffee contains over a thousand bioactive compounds, including caffeine, polyphenols, melanoidins and diterpenes.

The study suggests that the anti-inflammatory effects of compounds such as caffeine and chlorogenic acid may partially explain the lower risk of mental health problems observed in moderate coffee drinkers.

The authors noted that caffeine exerts its neuroprotective effects through dual mechanisms: A1R activation, associated with antidepressant effects, and A2AR inhibition, which counteracts stress-induced neural dysfunction.

Caffeine’s anti-inflammatory properties have previously been linked to a lower risk of dementia and slower cognitive decline. previous studies.
