For four days, Germany and the world have followed the rescue effort of a humpback whale that got stuck in the shallows of the bay near Timendorfer Strand in the Baltic Sea.
The story has a happy ending, because early in the morning on Friday, March 27, the whale was freed and reached deeper water through a channel that the rescuers had opened in the sandy bottom with a dredge.
A team of experts tried to get the animal out. from its natural trap since Monday morning. The whale appeared weak, but revived late Thursday and finally managed to come out, reports dpa.
Biologist Robert Marc Lehmann, however, warned that the animal, between 12 and 15 meters long, is not yet out of danger. The whale still has to find its way to the open sea and the Atlantic.
“The rescue is not over yet, but we have made a big move”, said the biologist.
